Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani noted businessman and philanthropist from Zambia, recently extended his full support towards the decision made by the Zambian President. On the occasion of Africa Day, President Hakainde Hichilema announced his plans to completely abolish the death penalty law. Dr. Rajan Mahtani, at the same time supporting the choice from the Zambian President, said that the consensus regarding abolishing death penalty has grown considerably across the globe and may be visible throughout Zambia too. Also, death penalty does not offer any approach to the Zambian Government as the demise penalty in itself is a massive punishment for the prisoners facing it. There are greater than 380 prisoners across Zambia and they face a hard existence, now not knowing which day is their final day in the world. As a result of the growing consensus toward demise penalty abolishment across the globe, the majority of the past Presidents in Zambia refused to provide capital punishment. The closing execution order became signed in 1997. As such, the announcement made by way of the Zambian President is a step within the right path and Dr. Mahtani also recommended the President’s choice by using calling it compassionate and right.
At the same time, Dr. Rajan Mahtani also highlighted the fact that the condition of the Zambian prisons is extremely degrading with several prisons not providing even fundamental human rights and basic human dignity to the prisoners. This has also forced to the Zambian government to start strategic decongestion of prisoners. As such, the concept of the death penalty holds no significance and it was the right decision for the Zambian President to step in and declare the abolishment of this archaic law.
