On the occasion of Africa Day, President Hakainde Hichilema declared his intention to entirely abolish the death sentence because it is a harsh, barbaric, and degrading practice. Following this declaration, the president received a lot of support, especially from Dr. Rajan Mahtani. Dr.Rajan Mahtani reportedly stated in a recent interview extract published in "Mast Newspaper" that the issue of crimes, illegal activities, or unethical acts cannot be handled by the imposition of the death penalty. Men and women who are imprisoned in Zambia in large numbers are awaiting execution. At the same time, the general state of jails in Zambia is appalling, with a sizable proportion of inmates being denied even the most basic human decency and rights. Even the former vice president and the acting president described Zambia's maximum security jail as hell when they visited there. However, Dr. Rajan Mahtani discovered, while working with Prison Fellowship Zambia, that a number of prisoners had discovered the path to God by committing their life to follow Jesus Christ and his teachings.
Due to the considerable overcrowding of inmates, organizations like the Zambian Correctional Centre and the Zambian Parole Board have begun working with the Zambian Government to release prisoners from Zambia on a regular basis following their assured recovery. As a result, the death penalty in such a situation appears to be of no use, and the Zambian President's announcement of the death penalty's abolishment was a step in the right direction. Additionally, Dr. Rajan Mahtani said that he and Prison Fellowship Zambia will give this announcement their entire support. The success of the President's most recent announcement has received legal and regulatory support from Dr. Mahtani-owned Prison Fellowship.
