Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani established Steven Malama award has established its mark within the education system of Zambia. The award was established in the year 2012 in memory of the late Steven Malala, a visionary and legal practitioner at the Zambian Supreme Court. Late Steven Malama was instrumental in merging of Solicitor’s Bar and Barrister’s Bar- two distinct bars in Zambia into a single bar. This merger has helped numerous law candidates and graduates in achieving law affiliation in a easier and less bureaucratic manner. To honour these significant contributions of Late Steven Malama, the award was established by his dear friend Dr. Rajan Mahtani.
The Steven Malama award is given to the top graduating student from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education. To qualify for the award, the winning candidate must also qualify for bar in their first attempt. The award was inaugurated in the year 2013 and since then, it is given to the deserving students of the institute. For the year 2018-19, the award was received by Emmanuel Bwalya Kaluba. After winning the award, Kaluba wrote an article in which Dr. Rajan Mahtani was thanked for his significant contributions in the field of education by recognising the hard work and dedication of the students. This article was later published at the ‘readers forum’ at the Daily Mail Newspaper. The Steven Malama award carries a Plaque, a certificate as well as cash prize worth K15,000. This cash prize has provided significant financial support to the winning students, any of whom come from difficult financial backgrounds. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani continues to work for the betterment of the Zambian society and its people.
