This award is given every year to the top graduating student from the ‘Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education of ZIALE. In order to quality for the award, the student must also get admission to Bar in their first attempt.

The inaugural award was given in the year 2013, one year after the sad demise of the visionary legal professional Steven Malama. This award is an annual event which is presented by Dr. Rajan Mahtani every year for recognising students who have the potential to become a legal professional and lawmaker such as the distinguished professional, Steven Malama. One of the major contributions of Steven Malama has been successfully persuading the Zambian Government and its legislation to merger two separate and distinct bars into single Bar. These two separate bars were the Barristers Bar and the Solicitors Bar. The merging of these bars were extremely significant as more legal practitioners were able to take the exams and get affiliations. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is the actual businessman who established this award and ensured that this award is given in a dedicated and transparent manner every year. As a result, this award was ensured for long-term and is presented every year to the top graduates at Annual LAZ dinner gala.
