Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is one of the most recognised and respected businessman in Zambia. His business establishments go many decades back, yet his reputation among his industry peers as well as local citizens have remained the same. Since his early businesses, Dr. Rajan Mahtani has maintained a image of a transparent, honest and ethical businessman. At the same time, Dr. Rajan Mahtani is also known for his several philanthropic and charitable contributions. Recently, one of his charitable contributions came into limelight when the 2018-19 annual Steven Malama award was present.
This award is actually established by Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani via his company Finance Bank Zambia where he holds the position of Chairman. This award was established with the objective of honouring late Steven Malama, a noted legal professional, bar luminary and significant contributor to the legal and regulatory policies and systems in Zambia. Steven Malama, along with many other significant supports, persuaded the Government of Zambia to merge two different bars; the solicitors bar and the Barristers bar into one single bar so that legal professionals can easily affiliate and continue with their profession.
The award was established in the year 2012 and given for the first time in 2013. Since then, it has become an annual competition wherein top graduating student from the Zambian Institute of Advanced Legal Education who has also passed the Bar in their first attempt is given this award. For the year 2018-19, the award winner was Emmanuel Bwalya Kaluba. After winning the award, Kaluba also wrote an article thanking Dr. Mahtani for his contributions This article was published at the ‘Readers Forum’ at the Daily Mail and thanked Dr. Mahtani for the award, which also carried a plaque in the winner’s name and a cash prize worth K15,000.
