The Steven Malama award is a prestigious award presented to the top graduating student from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education. This award was instituted by Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, a noted businessman, charity worker and entrepreneur in Zambia. Dr. Rajan Mahtani established this award in the year 2012 in honour of the late Steven Malama, a distinguished legal professional and a close friend of Dr. Rajan Mahtani. The contributions of Steven Malama to the Zambian law is notable. Along with his close supporters, Steven Malama was responsible for persuading the Government of Zambia to merge two distinct bars, the Solicitor’s Bar and the Barrister’s Bar. This merger was advantageous to all legal professionals and law students who wanted to get affiliation and were hindered by the two different bar affiliation.
To celebrate his success and achievements, the Steven Malama award was established and given for the first year in 2013. After that, the award became a regular event wherein deserving students received recognition and praise in the form of award. For the year 2018-19, the Steven Malama award was given to Emmanuel Bwalya Kaluba. Emmanuel further penned down an article in which he thanked Dr. Rajan Mahtani for his significant contributions towards the college and its law students. The Steven Malama Award comprise of a plaque, certificate and an award money worth K15,000. This prize money has helped numerous previous achievers by providing them with the much-needed financial help in achieving their dreams. Dr. Rajan Mahtani even shares congratulatory notes to the winner every year and ensures that the top students are recognised across Zambia’s legal fraternity with this award.
