After several years of staying in the back of the social trend, Zambia has finally woken up to worldwide recognition. President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, introduced that his government plans to abolish the death penalty row from the nation absolutely. Since this assertion, the President’s announcement has received sizable support from throughout Zambia. Among his supporters is Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, a stated businessman and philanthropist from Zambia and Africa. Dr. Rajan Mahtani highlighted that death penalty is an archaic and barbaric law. It is cruel, inhumane, and degrading and does no longer offer any solution for the Zambian authorities. While praising the selection from the Zambian President, Dr. Rajan Mahtani stated that only a person who is compassionate respects the rule of law respects essential human rights, as well as primary human dignity, will find the need in the direction of finishing this barbaric punishment, even for the prisoners.
Dr. Rajan Mahtani further highlighted that the consensus regarding eradicating the death penalty or capital punishment is significant across the globe and it is high time for the Zambian government to take a step in the right direction too. There is also a growing consensus across Zambia regarding the degrading condition of various Zambian prisons where prisoners are often devoid of basic human dignity and fundamental human rights. As such, the Zambian Government has started strategic decongestion of prisons with collaboration from institutions such as the Parole Board Zambia (PBZ) and Zambia Correctional Facility. As such, death penalty becomes an obsolete law in this scenario. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani has also stated that his company Prison Fellowship Zambia (PFZ) will provide legal and regulatory support to ensure that the decision from the Zambian President becomes true.
